Apr 18 | Circuit International de Pau |
Circuit de Pau,
France
2.769 km street course |

The 500cc race suffered from the absence of several of the top riders initially entered : the works bikes of Ray Amm (Norton), Nello Pagani (MV Agusta) and Pierre Monneret (Gilera, whose bike was stuck in customs) were a no-show, as were those of Georg Braun (Horex), Hans Bartl (BMW) and Javier De Ortueta (Norton).
This left a nevertheless good field of 13 starters
: eleven Manx Nortons in the hands of some of the Continental Circus’ best privateers and the two Guzzis of Thorn-Prikker and Anderson, the only works entry in the race.
A nice field of ten international outfits was on hand in Pau for the sidecar race. All were Norton mounted, except Italy's Renato Prati (Moto-Guzzi). Jacques Drion, Hans Haldemann and Otto Schmid were the pre-race favourites.
Jean Murit was third early on, but was later passed by René Bétemps who went on to finish third by a nice 14s margin. Edgar Strub narrowly beat Australia's Bob Mitchell for 5th place after a race long duel, with Roland Benz and Renato Prati were a lap behind. Otto Schmid and Marcel Beauvais both retired in the first laps with mechanical troubles.
