The 500cc race suffered from the absence of several of the top riders initially entered : the works bikes of Ray Amm (Norton), Nello Pagani (MV Agusta) and Pierre Monneret (Gilera, whose bike was stuck in customs) were a no-show, as were those of Georg Braun (Horex), Hans Bartl (BMW) and Javier De Ortueta (Norton).

This left a nevertheless good field of 13 starters

: eleven Manx Nortons in the hands of some of the Continental Circus’ best privateers and the two Guzzis of Thorn-Prikker and Anderson, the only works entry in the race.

A nice field of ten international outfits was on hand in Pau for the sidecar race. All were Norton mounted, except Italy's Renato Prati (Moto-Guzzi). Jacques Drion, Hans Haldemann and Otto Schmid were the pre-race favourites.

Race
Tommy Wood took the lead at the start, with Anderson, Goffin, Campbell, Collot and Taveri following behind at the end of the first lap. Anderson soon ran into brake troubles, and started slipping down the field until he was forced into retirement shortly before the halfway point. Wood seemed in control in the lead, although Goffin, now in second place, was not giving up too much ground as the race progressed. Taveri passed Collot and then Campbell, and by lap 5 was fourth just behind Anderson, and soon passed him as well.
By lap 15 the order was Wood, Goffin (+12s), Taveri (+25s), Collot, with Campbell, Bruguiere, Gauch, Flores, Thorn-Prikker, Anderson and Collomb following in that order, all having been lapped at least once by this point. Goffin started to up his pace and the gap with Wood began to shrink, but the British driver was in fact in control and responded with a fastest race lap on lap 24, after which he managed to keep Goffin at around 12s until the end. Taveri was third, some 12s behind Goffin, with Collot fourth and last of the riders on the lead lap, after a rather conservative race following his fall in the 350cc race. Campbell was 5th, one lap down, while rest, led by Bruguiere were two laps or more in arrears. Apart from Anderson, the other retirements were those of Bayle and Flahaut.
