As usual, the classic Belgian road race had one of the best fields of any of this year's International races : Agostini, Read, Sheene, Cecotto, Länsivuori, Nixon, Rougerie, Schwärzel and Steinhausen headed the entry list on the ultra-fast Chimay circuit.
Four solo classes and a sidecar race where scheduled, and although the race distances were decent, the nature of the Chimay circuit meant that this amounted to 20 minute sprints ! Cecotto set a new track record during the F750 race, with a lap at a stunning 214.8 km/h average speed. Helped by a glorous weather, the event was a total success, with a reported 60,000 spectators attending on race day.
Race
John Dodds on the Mitsui Yamaha led from flag to flag, and won by 30 seconds over his nearest rival. There was a lot of action behind him though, with South Africa's Alan North and Kork Ballington acting as locomotives in a train of TZ Yamahas fighting for a podium spot. Swiss Bruno Kneubühler was initially second behind Dodds, but had to retire on the second lap with mechanical problems on his Hostettler Yamaha. Ballington thus assumed second place with North behind him, but the latter went straight into a runoff area after missing his braking point, and rejoined a lowly 15th.
This left Ballington fending off the assaults of Rougerie, Nurmi, Pons, Fau and Stadelmann all race long, and the Sid Griffiths Racing rider seemed well on his way to second place when he had to retire with mechanical issues just a few kilometres from the chequered flag. Rougerie, who had taken the lead in the pursuing pack, inherited the first accessit, with Stadelmann, Pons, Fau, Nurmi and a fast recovering North finishing in that order behind the ELF Yamaha.
